Ora Don Smith, 93, of Marshalltown and formerly of Oskaloosa died Friday, October 3, 2014, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. He was born September 21, 1921, at Jerome, Iowa, the son of Ora S. and Edna Hall Smith.

Don served in the United States Army during World War II, and received a Purple Heart.

He was united in marriage to Donna Rae McCarty in Missouri; she died in November of 1980.

Don was a contractor for many years. He worked first in Strawberry Point and the Cedar Rapids areas. He later worked for and overhead door company and did various other carpentry jobs.

He enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

His family includes his two brothers: Cecil Smith of Beacon, Arlie Smith of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Don was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; two sisters, Doris Van Toorn and Dora Jean Smith; and a brother, Oris Dean Smith.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Rev. Mike Omundson officiating.
Burial will be in the Corydon Cemetery at Corydon, Iowa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family will be held Tuesday morning from 9 until service time at 11.
Memorials may be made to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
