Robert Lee Plate, 74, passed away on October 1, 2014, in Pella, Iowa. He was born on April 5, 1940, to John H. and Agnes Steenhoek Plate in Prairie City, Iowa.

Robert received his early education at the Prairie City schools and then farmed. Later he moved to Pella and worked at Vermeer Manufacturing for 41 years.

In April 1965, Robert was united in marriage with Betty Garrett.

In his younger years, Robert enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball, coaching Little League baseball, and watching his son’s sporting events. The family spent much time camping, which he and Betty continued until very recently.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Betty Plate of Pella, Iowa; a son, Bobby (& Laura) Plate of Plano, Texas; two stepsons:  Ken (& Claire) De Cook of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Don (& Elaine) De Kock of Pella, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Becky (& Paul) Kaefring of Iowa City, Iowa; seven grandchildren:  Brittany (& Anthony), Michelle Plate, Jacque De Cook, Kenny (& Melissa) De Cook, Renee (& Scott), Shelly (& Chad), Heather (& Brian); ten great-grandchildren (with two on the way!), and his siblings: Mary Lou (& Marvin) Vande Lune of Pella, and Larry (& Patricia) Plate of Pella.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Leona Mae Van Sant.

He will always be remembered as a loving and kind man.

No funeral service is planned.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 3, 2014, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home of Pella, Iowa
Memorials may be given to Pella Comfort House.
