New Magistrate Judge Sworn In

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Mahaska County has a new Magistrate Judge.

Amber Thompson was sworn in on Tuesday, by Judge Randy DeGeest, as the newest Magistrate for Mahaska County. She will be taking over for retiring Magistrate Judge Scott Campbell.

Thompson, who is married and has two small children, attended Kirkwood Community College and Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids. Thompson then went to Drake Law School. Following law school, she clerked at the Court of Appeals. Thompson continued her career by working at Stravers Law Firm in Oskaloosa, where she worked in criminal defense and family law before moving into juvenile court and title opinions.

Thompson was among three candidates for the position, as attorneys Misty White and Diane Crookham-Johnson also applied for the position. Thompson said she felt as though the interview went well, and thought “the commission did a really nice job.”

Thompson mentioned that the commission asked good questions during the interview process.

Thompson added, “I think it will be a good opportunity to represent the judicial system” and that she is excited for the next step in her career.
