Top Ranked Pella Rolls Over Oskaloosa
Bennett Spry is brought down by a group of Pella Dutch on Friday night at the Lacey Stadium.
Oskaloosa, Iowa – It was the season’s first truly cold day, but the Pella Dutch remained red hot on the field as they rolled past the Oskaloosa Indians 61-6 Friday night at Lacey Stadium.
I asked Oskaloosa Head Football Coach Mike Sterner if the score was somewhat expected going against the top ranked team in Class 3A. “This wasn’t expected and it’s not acceptable either,” said Sterner after the Friday night defeat. “We ran into the best Pella team I’ve seen.”
According to Sterner, the players weren’t intimidated with the fact they were to take on the top ranked team. “I don’t think they paid attention to that at all,” explained Sterner. “Our kids did a pretty good job of finding things to get better on.”
“Up front they [Pella] are very physical. They beat us upfront very soundly,” Sterner said. “When you don’t win the line of scrimmage, even remotely, you’re going to struggle.”
“We were not executing. We were not getting off the football. We were slow off the ball,” said Sterner, who puts that as one item on his checklist that needs to be fixed. “The small things we’ve been working on weren’t evident when a team flat out beats you off the ball.”
“I love our kids, and I would wish not to be anywhere else, and our kids will bounce back. They’ve taken 3 pretty good losses right now and they’re hurting,” Sterner shared.
Oskaloosa was without its top rusher in Nate Van Veldhuizen, who was dinged up last week against Ottumwa. “With all his heart, he wanted to be in the football game and wanted to make a difference every play, but the reality was, he wasn’t 100%,” explained Sterner, who consulted with the trainers this past week on Van Veldhuizen’s condition.
Oskaloosa starting quarterback Joe Sterner went down on the first play of the evening. He eventually made a return later in the game, after back-up quarterback TJ Boyle took a helmet to helmet hit.
With a sophomore quarterback in, Ethan Arnold stepped into the pressure cooker and experienced his first Friday night lights. With Arnold’s admirable job of the Indians next man, the lack of reps made apparent that the next man in was starting to get the better of the team.
On Friday night, the Indians travel to Saydel, where Sterner says the team looks to continue improving, “and being our best.”
“We’re going to learn to be warriors. We’re going to learn to be tough and get up after things when things don’t go well,” said Sterner. “They’re going to bounce back. There’s no quit in our kids.”
