Robert Dale Douglas, 89, of Oskaloosa died Monday, September 8, 2014, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. He was born May 14, 1925, in Rose Hill, Iowa, the son of Helen Grace Douglas.

Robert was a veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the United States Army on June 28, 1943. He served in Italy and France and was wounded twice. He was awarded: a Purple Heart with one bronze oak leaf cluster, four overseas service bars, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with 4 bronze battle stars, and a good conduct metal. On December 4, 1945, he was honorably discharged from the Army. He returned to Oskaloosa and worked for Jess Mattix gas station. He later went to work for Jerry’s Shell gas station until his retirement.

Robert enjoyed keeping his yard immaculate, watching westerns, and playing the Harmonica. He also enjoyed watching baseball, especially the Cubs and the Cardinals.

His family includes his half-sister, Bonnie Roorda of Boise, Idaho; three half-brothers: William D. Miller of Tinley Park, Illinois, Harold (& Sandra) Miller of Springfield, Missouri, and Merle D. (& Connie) Miller of Oskaloosa; a half-sister in-law, Janet Miller of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother; and four half-brothers: Raymond Peterson, Ellsworth Peterson, Carroll E. Miller and Donald L. Miller.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 12, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Graveside military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
Burial will be in the White Oak Cemtery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family present will begin Friday morning at 10 a.m. and continue until service time at 11 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa Honor Guard.
