GREEN BAY, WIS. — A veteran lineup got the Central College men’s golf season off to a strong start, grabbing the first-round lead at the University of Wis.-Green Bay Invitational Sunday.

Using the same five golfers who competed for the Dutch in last spring’s Iowa Conference tournament, Central opened with 303 in the 54-hole tournament. That’s good for a 5-shot cushion over Wis.-Green Bay. Chicago State and Wis.-Parkside are tied for third in the six-team tourney with 316.

Competing at the demanding 7,097-yard, par-72 Green Bay Country Club, Desmond Stoll (senior, Lockport, N.Y.) carded a 1-over-par 73. He’s tied for third, two shots off the lead.

“Desmond had a pretty solid round,” Green said. “He had a couple of hiccups but he birdied the last hole, which is always nice.”

Adam Squires (senior, Waterloo, Columbus HS) had 75, David Watson (senior, San Diego, Calif., Patrick Henry HS) had 77, Jon Prescott (senior, Mendota, Ill.) shot 78 and Clayton Curwin (senior, Faribault, Minn., Shattuck St. Mary’s HS) had 82.

“I thought Adam Squires had a solid round, too,” Green said. “Jon Prescott got off to a rocky start. He shot 42 on the front nine, but played even par on the back. I was proud of the way he came back. We needed that fourth score.”

Central also had three players competing as at-large entrants. Kacie Brog (sophomore, Burlington) shot 80, Jack Cananagh (freshman, Broomfield, Colo.) had 84 and Sean Rennich (freshman, Pella) had 82.

“I thought we did pretty good for this course,” Green said. “It’s probably the hardest course we’ll see all year.”

Sunday’s round stretched more than six hours and was a test of patience.

“We’ve got a lot of room for improvement tomorrow,” Green said. “We missed a lot of 5-footers today. But everyone has seen the course now. We’re looking forward to tomorrow.”
