Oskaloosa, Iowa – It was a rivalry renewal almost 2 decades in the making when Ottumwa traveled to Oskaloosa on Friday night. With the 27-13 loss to the Ottumwa Bulldogs Friday night, the now 0-2 Indians will be hosting a strong Pella team this coming Friday.

“Not fun to lose to those people,” said Oskaloosa Head Coach Mike Sterner after the game. “Especially when they don’t show great sportsmanship… but we knew that going in.”

“Our kids played to the end. I was real proud of them for that,” said Sterner “A little frustrated with our performance obviously. Offensively, we didn’t get off the ball at all and their defensive line just really caused us havoc.”

Sterner said that the Indians spotted the Bulldogs a bunch of points early on in the contest.  “We’ve still got things to fix. We’ve still got to come off the ball, and when we do that, we’re gonna start clicking,” said Sterner. “The good thing about our kids was, the longer they played, the better they got.”

“Defensively, we made some great adjustments,” said Sterner of the effort that helped to keep the game from getting away completely. Sterner said that with the adjustment and communication on the defensive end, “we’ve learned to do better and do our job. Instead of getting too deep, they get so, we’ve got to be not so amped up that we run by things. Early in the game, we were running right by the running back and not making great tackles.”

Making tackles will be the focus this week during practice Sterner said.

The biggest offensive play of the game came in the 4th quarter for Oskaloosa, when Junior Joe Sterner connected with Senior Max Johnson for an 80 yard touchdown.

The Indians were playing two starters down on the offensive line, and Sterner said the next man in gave an admirable job. During the contest Friday night, two Oskaloosa stand-outs Nate Van Veldhuizen and Ki-Jana DeJong had moments where they were helped off the field. Sterner thought maybe they were just deep bruises.

The Indians are back in action again Friday evening at home.
