Susan Johnson, 96 of Grinnell, and formerly of Montezuma, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2014 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Susan S. Johnson, the daughter of John and Annie (Shedd) Snyder, was born on June 12, 1918 in Roland, Iowa.

Susan was a graduate of Hornick High School in Hornick, Iowa in 1934. She then graduated from the University of Iowa in 1939.

On September 1, 1940, Susan was united in marriage to Vincent Johnson in Davenport, Iowa. To this union, two children were born: Kristin and Vincent II. While Vincent attended Law School, they lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan. There she worked as a Secretary for an attorney. Following Vincent’s graduation, they moved back to the family farm near Montezuma. Susan taught Music and English for a year at Barnes City before working for Vincent at the Johnson Law Office as a secretary. She worked there for over 40 years, retiring in 1991.

After retirement, they enjoyed wintering in Sun City, Arizona and traveling. Their most notable trips were to the Mediterranean, Alaska and cruises in the Caribbean.

Susan enjoyed baking pies, cooking, sewing and singing. She was a member of: the United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir; the PEO; Daughters of the American Revolution “DAR”; KYN Club; and the Eastern Star.

Her memory will be honored by her children: Kristin (& Dave Maxwell) Armstrong of Gibson and Vincent (& Karon) Johnson II of Montezuma; four grandchildren: Vincent E. Johnson III, Donald Joseph Armstrong II, Eric Lynn Johnson and Susan Elizabeth Swacker; two step grandchildren: Jenny Lynn Webster and Curtis Wade Maxwell; nine great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; and a sister, Ranné Sioux of Salisbury, North Carolina.

Susan is preceded in death by her parents, John and Annie Snyder; her husband, Vincent; and two brothers: Richard Allan Snyder and John Shedd Snyder.

A private family graveside service will be held at the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.
A Visitation/Luncheon will be held at the Montezuma United Methodist Church fellowship hall in the basement of the church on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Montezuma United Methodist Church or the Mayflower Activities Department.
