Belleville, Ill.–The Statesmen women’s soccer team fell short in extra play for the second time in three games this year as it dropped a 2-1 decision to non-conference opponent Lindenwood-Belleville Sunday.

WPU (1-2), which was outshot 14-10, played even through the first 64 minutes. The Lynx (1-1) finally broke the tie at the 64:20 mark, but Alyce Correia (So., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) had a quick answer when she scored off a free kick in the 71st minute. It was her first goal of 2014.

The contest remained 1-1 for the last 20 minutes of regulation to force overtime. Unfortunately, 8:03 into the extra session, Lindenwood-Belleville ended the showdown with the golden goal.

Francis Lee (Fr., Fort Dodge, Iowa, Undecided) headed the visitors with four shots, while Correia had three and Camila Parra (Fr., Brisbane, Australia, Biology) finished with two. Kelly Button (Sr., Tucson, Ariz., Business Management) tallied seven saves in the setback.

Next Up–William Penn hosts non-conference opponent Briar Cliff next Friday at noon in the opener of the William Penn Classic.
