Thelma A. Grandia, 91, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Mercy Hospice-Johnston. She was born February 5, 1923, in Audubon County, Iowa, the daughter of Louis O. and Mae McDonough Pieper.

Thelma grew up on a farm north of Anita. She graduated from Anita High School with the class of 1942. On April 25, 1945, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Kline at Atlantic. To this union two sons were born, Paul and David. On April 2, 1956, Lloyd died. Thelma moved into Anita following Lloyd’s death. On July 19, 1959, she was united in marriage to L.C. “Mun” Grandia at Anita, Iowa. Following their marriage they moved to Oskaloosa.

Thelma received training from Indian Hills while working in C.C.U. and was a Certified Nurse’s Assistant. Thelma worked at Mahaska County Hospital for 37 years as a nurse’s assistant and as the ward clerk. She retired from there in 1997. Mun died on July 23, 1981.

Thelma was an active and faithful member of the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, where she was part of the Mary Martha Group. She was also involved with C.W.F., American Legion Auxiliary, Mahaska Hospice Auxiliary, Mahaska Hospital Auxiliary, and Oskaloosa Women’s Club.

She enjoyed her flower garden, and making embroidered bed spreads for her family. She also made baby quilts for all of her great grandchildren. She delighted in spending time with her family.

Her family includes her two sons and their wives: Paul and Mary Kline of Council Bluffs, and David and Judy Kline of Des Moines; six grandchildren: Dan (Nikki) Kline, Brad (Jami) Kline, Amy Mosher, Brett (Jessica) Kline, Drew Kline, and Shauna (Kevan) Kline; eight great grandchildren: Logan Kline, Mason Kline, Nolan Kline, Will Kline, Morgan Kline, Dana Kline, Ellie Mosher, and Wesley Montgomery; and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to her two husbands, Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Bill Pieper; and a sister, Maxine Pieper.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 25, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. in the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Michael Omundson officiating.
Graveside service and burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Anita, Iowa at 3:30 Friday afternoon.
There will be a time of fellowship with the family at the American Legion in Anita, Iowa following the burial. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family will be held Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. until service time at 10:30 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or the American Heart Association.
