Ruth Arlene Newell, 90, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Rose Hill, died Sunday, July 20, 2014, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born February 25, 1924, in Mahaska County the daughter of Liston and Fern Smith Koogler.

Ruth graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1942. On November 10, 1942, she was united in marriage to Glen Newell at Lancaster, Missouri. Glen died September 8, 2011.

Ruth stayed home to care for her family and home. Once her children were in school, she went to work as a secretary for the Eddyville School District. She and Glen moved and she took a job as a Teacher’s Aide at the Coggan School District. She and Glen also worked as the caretakers at the Wapsie ‘Y’ Camp. Later they moved to Rose Hill and Ruth worked in Oskaloosa as the Office Assistant at Farm Bureau.

Ruth was a member of the Rose Hill Community Church, American Legion Auxiliary in Oskaloosa, 4-H when her children were involved, and the Pi Chi neighborhood club in Rose Hill.

She enjoyed playing cards with family, traveling, and taking care of her home and flower garden. She delighted in spending time with her family. She and Glen never missed their grandchildren’s activities.

Her family includes her three children: Dennis Newell of Oskaloosa, Jean Dannen of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Carol (Gary) Helwig of Knoxville; four grandchildren: Patrick (Tara) Helwig, Bryan (Anu) Helwig, Jill (George) Larson, and Ross Dannen; five great grandsons: Brock Helwig, Boston Helwig, Reed Helwig, Nash Helwig, and Alex Larson; two sisters-in-law: Edna Koogler of Pella and Bonnie Newell of Oskaloosa; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Hunt of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Donald and Fred Koogler; and a sister and her husband: Maxine and Bill Holm.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 24, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Burial will be in the Bloomfield Cemetery southeast of Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Wednesday morning after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6-8 Wednesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Rose Hill Community Church.
