Drum & Bugle Corps to Perform in Oskaloosa next week.

The Vanguard Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps from Santa Clara, CA are the defending Drum Corps International (DCI) Open Class World Champions. They are the junior organization to the Santa Clara Vanguard who stayed on the WPU campus and rehearsed at the Lacey complex last year. The Vanguard Cadets, made up of some of the finest high school musicians in the country, will be hosted by William Penn University Athletic Bands and rehearse in the new community stadium on Wednesday, July 23 and Thursday, July 24 from 9 AM to 9 PM each day, with the evening rehearsals being the most interesting and entertaining. The corps will suit-up on Thursday evening and rehearse in uniform, running their entire program at approximately 9:20 PM on Thursday evening July 24th. The exhibition will be free of charge at the new Community Stadium. Due to construction on the press box, the corps will perform to the east “visitor’s side”. All spectators are being asked to park and be seated on the east side of the field.

The corps is also planning a special opening to the “Summer Concerts in the Bandstand” with a 7:30 PM standstill performance on the square prior to the Oskaloosa Municipal Band concert on Thursday evening, and are excited to be a part of the celebration for the 150th year anniversary of our Oskaloosa Municipal band.

The Vanguard Cadets travel approximately four weeks during the summer months across the United States and Canada performing in competitive field shows and parades while providing instruction for the novice through the experienced member in the areas of brass, percussion and color guard. Membership is primarily open to those between the ages of 15 and 19.

The Vanguard Cadets have been a DCI Open Class (formerly Division II/III) Finalist every year the Corps has appeared in DCI World Championships (1991, 93, 98, 2000, 02, 04, 06, 07, 08) and won DCI Division II in 2000 and DCI Open Class in 2008 and 2013. The Corps has also competed in the DCI Division I Quarterfinals in 1993, Semifinals in 2000 and the DCI World Class Semifinals from 2011-13. The Santa Clara Vanguard was formed in 1967 in Santa Clara, California. SCV has the distinction of being the only organization to maintain its elite membership on the Drum Corps International (DCI) Board of Directors since the inception of DCI in 1972. They are the first organization in DCI history to have two drum and bugle corps as open class member corps in the elite Top 25 of DCI (1993) and the elite Top 17 of DCI (2000).

The Vanguard Cadets’ 2013 program The Art of War explores the full range of spectacle and emotions that have defined war since time immemorial. A cinematic score, thrilling movement and captivating color creates a pastiche of the grand and intimate war stories that have moved audiences in every form of art. From the terror of battle to the indescribable grief of loss; from quiet reflections of home to the uplift of forgiveness, The Art of War is about the profound effect we have on one another.
