Oskaloosa, Iowa – Kraig Van Hulzen was appointed to fill the remaining year of outgoing board member Charlie Comfort’s term. Van Hulzen had recently ran for the Oskaloosa School Board, but was defeated by current board president Carl Drost.

Comfort announced last month that he would be stepping down from the board, for Director District 4, as he would need to move from his district. Van Hulzen was sworn in on the unanimous vote.

Oskaloosa Superintendent Russ Reiter talked about his and Middle School Principal Andy Hotek’s trip to the Habai Province of China. This is the same area from where Oskaloosa hosted over 20 middle-school-age Chinese visitors in February of this year.

“It was an outstanding educational experience,” said Reiter. “I think we came back with a better sense of what they would like to see happen. I think we have a pretty good idea of where we would like to see this go, and maybe somewhere in the middle we can meet.”

“There are some tremendous opportunities there, we believe,” says Reiter of the possibility of creating a sister-school relationship. Muscatine, West Des Moines Downling and Oskaloosa would all be part of the program.

The board also approved going to a 4 day week for preschool. Fridays would be used as a teacher work day as to assist those students in need.
