Patricia Barbara Pierce Patterson, 92, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, July 5, 2014, at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab. Center in Oskaloosa. She was born June 3, 1922, at Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Charles David and Meda Ann Knight Pierce.

Patricia graduated from Ottumwa High School with the class of 1940. She continued her education at Iowa State University and graduated from there with her B.S. in Botany in 1945.

On May 14, 1944, Patricia was united in marriage to Lloyd Patterson in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1948, the family moved to Oskaloosa.

Patricia worked as a professional photographer and dark room technician for Sybenga Studio in Oskaloosa from 1953 to 1978. In 1978 she opened her own photography studio in Oskaloosa and operated that until her retirement in 1988.

Patricia gave selflessly of her time and talents to many organizations in Oskaloosa and Mahaska County including: Girl Scouts, Parent Teacher Association, Mahaska County Historical Society, Oskaloosa Historic Preservation Commission, Oskaloosa Main Street, Oskaloosa Chamber of Commerce, and the Mahaska County Recreation Trail Committee. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader and church historian. From 1994 to 2007, she and Lloyd were members of the College Avenue Friends Church in Oskaloosa where together they served as the Custodians of Records for the Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends. She was also a lifetime member of the Mahaska County Historical Society. She was recognized by the Oskaloosa Chamber of Commerce as Citizen of the Year in 1996, for all of her volunteer work.

She enjoyed traveling, especially to the mountains to hike and take photographs. She also enjoyed doing genealogy for her family and Lloyd’s family.

Her family includes her husband of over 70 years, Lloyd Patterson of Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband, Mary Patterson & (John) Greener of Washington, Iowa; a son and his wife, David & (Jeanne) Patterson of Dubuque, Iowa; 5 grandchildren; 1 step grandson; and 5 great grandchildren.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; a son, James “Andy” Patterson; a grandson, Sean Patterson; two sisters, Martha Pierce and Frances Pierce; and two brothers, Franklin Pierce and Charles Pierce.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Bruce Wittern officiating.
Following the funeral ceremony Patricia’s body will be cremated.
Visitation will begin Tuesday morning after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Central United Methodist Church or Mahaska County Historical Society.
