Joan Teachout, 75, of Oskaloosa passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born August 20, 1938, in Alton, Iowa, the daughter of Nickolas and Mary Henrisy Steichen.

Joan graduated from Remsen St. Mary’s High School with the class of 1955. Joan was a homemaker and mother. She always made sure that she took care of her family.

On August 13, 1987, she was united in marriage to Jim Teachout in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jim died on October 21, 2009. Following Jim’s death Joan moved to Oskaloosa.

She enjoyed taking care of people and spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed eating at different restaurants, though Tasos in Oskaloosa was her favorite. She looked forward to her “True Stories” magazine coming every month and keeping up on her soap operas. Though life’s journey scattered the family around the country, Joan’s daughters were by her side in her final moments.

Her family includes her four children: Sherie Zamora of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, Cathy Ann Williams of Oskaloosa, Laurie (Richard) Moritz of Cedar Rapids and James Steichen (Dr. Carol Lang) of Slayton, Minnesota; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a grand dog; two sisters: Betty (Walter) Crossman of Lakewood, Colorado, and Patricia (Leonard) Rienert of Indianola, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Jim, Joan was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Brad Zamora; eight brothers; and seven sisters.

As was Joan’s wish, her body has been cremated and no visitation is planned.
A private celebration of life service will be held at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Crisis Intervention in Oskaloosa.
