A group of dog-loving Harley enthusiasts have formed a club in Central Iowa for one purpose- to combine their passion for riding motorcycles with the desire to help out animals in need. The “Sunday Strays,” based out of the Marshalltown area, plan to make monthly rides this summer in an effort to raise money for shelter dogs in need. The group will make their inaugural run on Sunday, May 25th when the group travels to the Cellar Peanut Pub in Oskaloosa. All proceeds raised that day will benefit the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter in Oskaloosa.

According to group co-organizer Missy Pieters, each monthly ride will benefit the animal shelter in the selected destination area. “We came up with this idea about two months ago,” Pieters said, “Our Harley friends got together one night and started brainstorming ways we could make our outings more meaningful. We’ve done other benefits in the past like one day poker runs, but we wanted to do something that would help more than just one shelter.” According to Pieters, the group decided to offer a “buy-in” which consists of a one-time $10 donation. In turn, the rider gets a punch card which can be entered in an end-of-the-year drawing for prizes. Half of the $10 fee will be placed in a fund for the animals and the other half will go in a prize fund for the riders. The club has also asked each bar or restaurant on the schedule to offer a food or drink special with a portion of the proceeds to be given to the animal in need. There will also be raffle prizes the day of each event and, of course, the group will also seek donations to reach the goal for the particular animal in need. To date, the club has sold over 60 passes and hopes to break the 100 mark before the first ride to Oskaloosa at the end of the month. Anyone is welcome to join and the club is hoping to attract new members in Oskaloosa. “Even if you are not a Harley person you can still join us at the Cellar Peanut Pub,” Pieters said, “It’s a good way to help the shelter dogs at your local shelter.”

The Cellar Peanut Pub in Oskaloosa will host the riders on the 25th beginning at approximately 11 a.m. The Pub will offer their famous Bloody Mary’s as the special that day. The club is also hoping representatives from the Stephen Memorial Shelter will be on hand to talk about the animals they are housing and the specific animal the club will be raising money for that day.

In addition to the Oskaloosa stop, the Sunday Strays will make journeys to the Jitney Bar in Monticello on June 22, 3C Bistro in Charles City on July 13, Toby K’s Hideaway in Boone on August 17, and the Silver Dollar in Chelsea on September 7 before concluding the riding season at Jax Restaurant in Marshalltown on October 12.
