Oskaloosa, Iowa – On Monday morning the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors hired a new county engineer.

Dave Shanahan, who is the current county engineer for Cherokee County, will take over for outgoing county engineer Jerry Neusbaum in July of this year.

“I think Dave will be an asset to the community, and I think he’s pretty excited about coming here,” said Mahaska County Supervisor Mike Vander Molen.

The Supervisors also heard reports from Mahaska County Conservation and MCARD.

The board approved the IRVM Noxious Weed Notice.

The board set a public hearing for May 5th for two proposed ordinances. The first will set attorney fees paid, in cases for the county, such as child custody. This is used to limit the expenditure for the county, and make it more consistent with state payment guidelines.

The second hearing will be over a proposed ordinance that will make it easier for municipalities to purchase properties that are being sold at tax sale. This is being considered in order to help clean up properties.

Sick leave policy and handbook revisions were discussed, and payroll changes for the Auditor and Secondary Roads were approved.
