Mr. Shirley James “Short” Drost, age 86, of Republic, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2014, in his home, with family at his side.

Short was born on October 9, 1927, in Mahaska County, Iowa, the son of James and Cora (DeRooi) Drost.

Short served his country during World War II, in the United States Air Force. He was united in marriage to Mary Franklin on December 6, 1947, and had just celebrated 66 years of marriage.

Short was employed as a farmer, was in the oil and gas business, worked on the Iowa Highway Department, and was an operator at the city’s water treatment plant, all in Iowa.

After moving to Republic around 24 years ago, Short became a member of the Hood United Methodist Church, and was active in the United Methodist Men’s Group. Short loved to learn about history, especially American History.

He is survived by his wife of over 66 years, Mary Drost of Republic, Missouri; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Jerry Van Wyk; grandson and his wife, Michael and Kristi Van Wyk; great grandchildren, Mikki, Will, Kaylin, and Maxwell; nieces and nephews; other extended family; church family; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers: Fred, John, Rich, Bill, and Joseph.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa.
Graveside military rites will be given by the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family will be held Tuesday morning from 9 until service time at 11.
