Pair of Tenth-Place Finishes for WPU

Las Vegas, Nev.–The Statesmen women’s bowling squad earned two tenth-place performances out west this week.

William Penn was tenth out of 18 teams at both the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational on Wednesday and Thursday and at the Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout on Friday and Saturday.

At the first tournament, the Statesmen knocked down 7,851 pins in nine regular games, falling 53 pins shy of advancing to the eight-team knockout tournament. Wichita State (Kan.) won the qualifying with 9,027 pins and then dominated the bracket format as well.

Tanya Roumimper of Wichita State led the 127-person qualifying field with a 212.1 average (1,909 pins).

Kirstin Newberry (Sr., Holland, Mich., Secondary Education) headlined the navy and gold effort by taking 13th with a 188.3 average, while Stephanie Adams (Fr., Souris, Manitoba, Business Management) also started all nine games with a 184.3 mark (18th overall).

Kelsey Johnson (Jr., Montgomery, Ill., Secondary Education) was next at 169.8 (nine games), while Montana Pence (Fr., Stronghurst, Ill., Elementary Education) had a 179.8 clip in eight games.

Emily Braga (So., Newton, Iowa, Communications), at 149.1 (seven games), and Blair Farris (So., Washington, Iowa, Elementary Education), at 171.5 (two games), were in competition, while MacKenzie Boyd (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) rolled a 144 in her only start.

At the Collegiate Shootout, the Statesmen were again tenth with 9,116 pins in six regular games and four Baker sets. Wichita State (Kan.) concluded a perfect week by winning the title with 11,579 pins.

Heather Melvin of WSU was first out of 123 rollers with a 229.0 average. Adams led William Penn in the week’s second meet, ranking seventh with a 207.7 average.

Newberry had a 193.2 mark, while Pence (183.5) and Johnson (164.5) also rolled all six games. Boyd’s 151.0 clip (four games) and Braga’s average of 135.5 (two games) concluded the Statesmen play.

Next: William Penn returns to action after the New Year, traveling to Addison, Ill. for the ISBPA/Kegel Midwest Collegiate Classic on Saturday and Sunday, January 18-19.
