New Sharon, Iowa – Two individuals were injured and one person killed in a two car collision 1 mile East of New Sharon on Thursday afternoon shortly after 4pm.

The driver of the first vehicle is a 14 year-old resident of Searsboro. They were driving a 1996 Chevrolet K1500 pickup truck east on Highway 63.

The second driver involved in the accident is 27 year-old Kassandra Ford of Oskaloosa, who was driving west on Highway 63.

According to a preliminary accident report by the Iowa State Patrol, vehicle 1 was eastbound on Highway 63 when it turned into a residential drive, turning into the path of the second vehicle.

“Due to the hillcrest in the area of the accident, limited sight distance may have contributed to the cause of the collision,” the report states.

The 14 year-old driver was transported to Mahaska Health Partnership from the scene by MHP Emergency Services. Ford was transported to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines by Mercy Air.

The third person involved in the accident was killed and has not yet been identified, at the time of report release, pending notification of family members.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office, New Sharon Fire and Rescue, Mahaska Health Partnership Emergency Services, New Sharon Police Department, the Oskaloosa Police Department and the Mahaska County Medical Examiner.

The accident remains under investigation.
