The Oskaloosa Indians Football team ended the season 7-4 in the second round of the state play-offs.

Washington, Iowa – The Oskaloosa Indians season came to an end Monday night in Washington as the Demons proved to be too much for the Indians, with the final score being 42-7.

Oskaloosa Head Coach Mike Sterner has been a familiar face around a program for some time, serving as assistant coaching positions, until last year.

This year started off bumpy for the team, with a false start in the coaching department when Jeff Barker was named head coach to replace Mark Schilb. Barker then later declined the position, and Sterner was then offeredw the position.

So, Sterner took over the 2 and 7 team, helping lead an organization to a state play-off berth with a 7-4 overall record.

“Washington’s a very fine football team,” said Sterner after the game Monday night. “It really was won and lost in the trenches at the line of scrimmage.”

“The second round, what a wonderful experience for these kids,” Sterner said. “Right now they’re hurting a lot, but hopefully when they have some time to reflect on it, they’re going to find out this is quite a nice achievement for the first year of returning some Oskaloosa pride and Oskaloosa football back to the way it has been.”

Sterner took a moment to reflect on the season since he was named head coach. “I feel like I’ve been at a dead sprint since about June, when I got the job,” said Sterner. “I know Oskaloosa kids, and when Oskaloosa kids want to devote themselves to something, they are all in, and they will go hard for us.”

Sterner talked about the coaching staff “who cares a great deal about kids and developing young men and young ladies into great citizens and great human beings.”

“The wins and losses will come and go, but it’s the way we carried ourselves, the way we showed our character, the things we learned how to do by serving other people, those are the things that are going to stick with these young people forever.” Sterner said.
