Statesmen Drop Season Finale to Grand View
Oskaloosa–Lauren Abbas (So., Adel, Iowa, Communications) scored a late goal to make it interesting, but the William Penn women’s soccer team could not complete the rally with a 2-1 loss to Grand View in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Saturday.
Playing against a stiff first-half wind, the Statesmen (6-12, 1-5 MCC) nearly kept against the Vikings (10-5-2, 4-2 MCC) off the board, but an own goal broke the scoreless tie in the 40th minute. It could have been worse, though, as the hosts were outshot 14-2 prior to halftime.
Playing with the wind, WPU owned a 6-3 edge in second-half shots. Unfortunately, the visitors notched their second goal at the 61:44 mark.
The contest seemed almost decided entering the final ten minutes, but Abbas cut the deficit in half with an unassisted goal at the 80:51 point. It was her first goal in the navy and gold.
Despite a few strong scoring opportunities, the Statesmen could not find the equalizer in the waning minutes.
Alyce Correia (Fr., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) paced the offense with four shots.
The loss drops WPU into a three-way tie for fifth place for the MCC Tournament. Due to tiebreakers, the team will be the #6 seed and have another shot at the third-seeded Vikings, traveling to Des Moines for a quarterfinal contest next Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
