Losing Streak Snapped at Augustana Invite
Rock Island, Ill.–The Statesmen volleyball team broke a lengthy losing streak as it competed at the Augustana Pumpkin Bash Friday and Saturday.
William Penn (13-27) opened the weekend Friday with a 3-0 loss to North Park (Ill.) (18-25, 21-25, 23-25). The day ended with a 3-1 setback to Central (17-25, 25-21, 18-25, 17-25).
The team’s 11-match losing streak finally came to a close as the navy and gold swept Simpson 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-22). Unfortunately, WPU wrapped up the weekend with a 3-0 loss to Wartburg (17-25, 13-25, 18-25).
North Park 3, William Penn 0
Shawni Wills (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) paced WPU with ten kills, while Kristal Campos (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Sociology) added six winners.
Dayna Sammons (Jr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Software Engineering) assisted 11 times and also matched Kylie Giger (So., Elkhart, Ind., Exercise Science) with two aces. Danielle Breeher (So., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided) managed 12 digs and Giger (two solos, one assist) and Campos (one solo, two assists) finished with three blocks each.
Central 3, William Penn 1
Campos’ 15 kills led the navy and gold, while Jeanette Cunningham (Sr., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Elementary Education) also reached double figures with 12. Sammons tallied 24 assists, while Breeher dug 16 attacks. Cunningham posted two solo blocks as the top net defender.
William Penn 3, Simpson 0
Less than three weeks after falling to the Storm in Indianola, the Statesmen hit .234 to avenge the loss on a neutral court.
Giger had a squad-best eight kills, while Campos and Cunningham notched seven points apiece. Alanna Connors (Sr., Libertyville, Ill., Biology) recorded six winners as well.
Sammons assisted 29 times and Breeher dug 16 attempts. Giger, Campos, and Cunningham all blocked two balls.
Wartburg 3, William Penn 0
Eight points came off the arm of Campos, while Sammons helped on 17 occasions. Breeher’s 25 digs were a weekend high and Giger managed all three of her team’s blocks.
“We had a pretty poor showing on Friday, but rebounded nicely on Saturday,” Head Coach Jennifer Carlson said. “It was great to break our losing streak and hopefully we can ride this momentum into a strong last couple weeks of the regular season.”
