Oskaloosa, Iowa – Thursday night the Oskaloosa City Band will be performing at 8 pm, under the direction of guest conductor, Kim Benson. Mrs. Benson, assistant director of bands at Pella Community School and long time city band member, has selected some of her favorite pieces for this week’s concert.

Highlights of this week’s concert include: “West Highland Sojourn” by Robert Sheldon, “Baby Elephant Walk” by Henry Mancini, “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” by Duke Ellington, “Sparks” by Brian Balmages, and two Karl King marches.

Instead of a “fiery overture based on a western theme”, Mrs. Benson has chosen a “fiery dance based on a western theme”. “Prairie Dances” by David Holsinger is a celebratory cowboy dance to commemorate the history of Wichita Falls, Texas.

The band will also play a new tune, originally commissioned for the Dallas Brass, entitled, “Curtain Call” which includes many traditional melodies synonymous with curtain calls on stage.

The band plays a special song each week to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. Audience members are encouraged to hand a note to a band member if they would like to recognize someone celebrating a special event.
