Morris Steven “Sonny” Comstock, 75, of Oskaloosa died Friday, July 5, 2013 at the Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa.
Sonny was born Monday, September 13, 1937 in Oskaloosa, the son of James Lewis and Mildred Stella Sproul Comstock. He attended Oskaloosa High School. On December 8, 1956, Sonny was united in marriage to Peggy Ann Sparks at Oskaloosa and she died Thursday, July 30, 2009.
In 1955, Sonny joined the U.S. Navy and served until 1959. Following his discharge, Sonny went to work in a rock quarry and did some construction for a time. He served on the Oskaloosa Police Department from 1962 until 1972 and the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Department from 1972 until 1977. In May of 1977 he left the Sheriff’s Department, and he rejoined the Oskaloosa Police Department in July of 1978. During his time at the police department, Sonny served as a Lieutenant, Detective and Chief of Police. He retired from law enforcement in 1993. He then went to work at Lafrenz Motors in Oskaloosa, and later at Vermeer Manufacturing as a security guard and a grounds keeper until his retirement from there in 2005.
Sonny enjoyed Catfish fishing, motorcycles, hunting, mushroom hunting, and working in his yard. Early on he enjoyed boxing in high school, and in the Navy. Sonny served as the first president of the Mahaska County Little League.
His family includes: two sons: Steven “Doc” Comstock and Lowell (& Kellie) Comstock both of Oskaloosa; two daughters: Brenda Comstock and Amy (& Dean) Fenton both of Oskaloosa; 11 grandchildren: Shannon (& Suzy), Stacie (& Jayme), Raina (& Rachel), Greg, Alisha, Nicole, Eric, Elizabeth (& Michael), Emily, Micheal, and Justice; 9 great grandchildren; a sister: June Wyllie of Delta; four brothers: Dean (& Bonnie) Comstock of Oskaloosa, Chuck (& Donna) Comstock of Surprise, Arizona, Harry Comstock of Fremont, Nebraska and Harold (& Carole) Comstock of Oskaloosa; and a brother-in-law: Ross Shaw of Greenville, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Peggy; a grandson: Stoney Comstock; and two sisters: Barbara Shaw and Ina Comstock.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Reverend Dr. Dennis Morey officiating.
Burial will be in the Friends Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Graveside military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
Visitation will begin Monday, July 8, 2013 after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Monday from 5 – 8 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Sonny Comstock Memorial Fund.
