Question of the week: Are you happy with the outcome of last week’s elections?

Voting Booth

Last week, we asked you if you agreed or disagreed with the Jason Ebelshieser verdict. A record setting number of votes was cast with 115 residents voting in our poll. 55 residents (48%) voted that they agreed with the verdict, 40 residents (35%) voted that they disagreed with the verdict, and 20 residents (17%) voted that they were unsure. The question of the week poll is unscientific and does not reflect the view of Osky News.

Last week, voters trooped to the polls to exercise their right to vote. In Iowa, a near record vote for a midterm election was indicated. County wide, Republicans swept through the offices, with only one Democrat winning. Sone Scott was the lone democrat to win re-election. Republican Guy Vander Linden pulled off the win in a nail biter and Republicans Ken Roozenboom and Greg Gordy were elected and re-elected to the County Board of Supervisors. Statewide, Republicans swept the state house, winning the Iowa House and coming within two seats in the Iowa Senate. Republicans also won the Governor’s office and pulled off an upset victory to win the Secretary of State’s office as well. Republican State Treasurer candidate Dave Jamison came within 5 points of beating 6 term Democrat incumbent Mike Fitzgerald. Republican Brenna Findley also had a strong showing in the Attorney General Election. Nationally, the Republicans won the House of Representatives however the Democrats maintained control of the Senate.

For the Democrats, it was a bad night. Democrat Governor Chet Culver became the first incumbent Governor in the history of Iowa to lose re-election. US Senate candidate Roxanne Conlin was trounced by Republican incumbent Chuck Grassley. Democrat Francis Thicke had a poor showing in the Secretary of Agriculture election against Bill Northy. Democrat Jon Murphy also had a poor showing in the State Auditor Election against David Vaudt. The Democrats also had to put up with losing 18 seats in the state house to lose control of the house. They also had a significant reduction in their lead in the senate now only controlling the senate by two seats.

Now its your turn to decide! Vote in our online poll. The polls will be open until 9 PM next Sunday when we will close the poll and release the final voting numbers.
