Kiwanis forming two youth clubs in January‏

Kiwanis International

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Ringing in the New Year in 2013 will have a special meaning for local Kiwanis clubs as they increase their influence and service to a new generation. Two adult Kiwanis clubs have long been a part of the Oskaloosa community, and now they are spreading their enthusiasm for community service and leadership development to middle school and high school students.

On January 15, these clubs will introduce the formation of a Builders Club for 11-14 year old youths and a Key Club for teens 14-18. Core values of both groups are character building, caring, inclusiveness and leadership. These values are emphasized through service and mentoring by community-minded adults. Each club is co-sponsored by a local organization that will provide a meeting place and a staff advisor to the group.

The Key Club is co-sponsored by the Oskaloosa Public Library, with William Ottens, library director, as its advisor. Kiwanis advisors will be Eric Palmer and Margaret Ratcliff. The Builders Club is co-sponsored by the YMCA of Mahaska County, with Kathy Rothfus, the YMCA’s youth director, as its advisor. Crystal Van Donselaar and Jeff Smith will represent Kiwanis as club advisors.

Parents and students are invited to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, January 15 in the upper level meeting rooms of the Oskaloosa Public Library. Club advisors and other Kiwanis members will be present from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to share details, answer questions and help students with submitting applications. Special guest Bob Mitchell, governor of the Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanis district will be on hand to endorse the local clubs’ efforts.

The Kiwanis International family of clubs is comprised of nearly 600,000 adult and youth members in 80 countries and includes something for everyone, with groups for adults, children, youth and college students. Collectively these clubs provide more than 18 million service hours each year to strengthen communities and serve children.

For more information, contact the club advisors or any member of Kiwanis.
