Local Judge Retires From Bench

Many judges from the 8th Judicial District and members of the Iowa Supreme Court were on hand Thursday for the retirement of Judge Blomgren.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Chief Judge James Q. Blomgren retired from the Iowa Judicial Branch Thursday.

In the courtroom of the Mahaska County Courthouse, co-workers and family gathered to pay tribute to the person who has lead the 8th Judicial District since 2001.

Blomgren earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1969 and his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1972. Blomgren began work as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Agriculture following his graduation from law school. Blomgren began private practice in 1973 until 1998 when he was appointed to the district court.

During his time in the Iowa Judicial Branch, he served on the Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Rules of Civil Procedure, and is a member of the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers, the American Board of Trial Advocates, and the Iowa Defense Council Association.

Blomgren will take a month off, and then return to private practice.

The Iowa Supreme Court has appointed District Judge Mary Ann Brown, Burlington, as Chief Judge of the Eighth Judicial District. Judge Brown succeeds Chief Judge James Q. Blomgren.
