Indians Come Up Short At Homecoming

Nate VanVeldhuizen stretches out to complete the Indians first touchdown drive during Friday’s Homecoming game.
Oskaloosa, Iowa – Spirits were high as the Indians burst onto the field at the Lacey Complex Friday night. Homecoming week had all come down to this, the game against the Winterset Huskies.
The Huskies make their mark on the scoreboard first when Tanner Porter carried the ball in from 1 yard out for the TD with 7:20 on the clock in the first quarter. The PAT kick by Drue Coffman was good and Winterset was on top 7-0. The Huskies had driven 67 yards in 8 plays to be the first to score.
The Huskies owned the scoreboard in the first quarter when they once again ran the ball into the end zone from 2 yards out. The Alex Forgy TD run, along with the Coffman PAT had the Huskies leading 14-0 with 2:50 remaining in the first. Winterset covered 33 yards in 7 plays for the TD.
The Indians found the end zone on the Nate VanVeldhuizen carry and stretch over the plane of the goal line to put Oskaloosa on the board. Jonah Renter nails the PAT and the score is 14-7 in favor of Winterset at the 10:45 mark in the second. The drive went 39 over 5 plays before VanVeldhuizen found the end zone.
Winterset quickly answers the challenge and Cory Briney connects to Trae Gilliand on the 47 yard TD pass with 9:09 on the clock in the second. Coffman’s kick is good for the PAT and it’s 21-7 Huskies. Winterset made quick work, covering 71 yards in just 4 plays for the score.
Oskaloosa’s Austin Redlich pulls off the QB keeper from 3 yards out for Oskaloosa with 1:16 remaining in the half. Renters kick is once again good, and heading into half time the Huskies remain on top 21-14. The Indians had driven 73 yards in 9 plays to complete the scoring drive.
The third quarter had no score, and it appeared the game could very well end up being a 21-14 win, but Oskaloosa was driving and the clock was winding down. Austin Redlich throws a pass that ends up being picked off by CJ Caudie. Caudie returned the ball 66 yards for a Husky touchdown with just 2:28 remaining in the game. The PAT by Coffman is no good and the score is 27-14, Huskies.
From there, things went from bad to worse. Winterset’s Noah Kaldenberg darts in from 26 yards out with just 1:22 remaining in the game. Coffman’s kick is once again no good, and the Huskies are cruising now with a score of 33-14.
The kickoff from Drue Coffman is returned by Tyce Sarver, but he coughs it up and Winterset capitalizes with the TD. This time, Coffman nails the PAT and the Huskies are ahead 40-14 with 1:11 remaining.
Indian Head Coach Mark Schilb had this to say. “We got off to a terrible start again. Dug ourselves in a hole and again we fought back in the second quarter.” Schilb said he felt good about the team in that quarter. After half time, Schilb said that the players were feeling good, “the kids played hard.”
Friday night, the Indians head to Pella.
