Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter Takes Woofstock Fundraiser in New Direction
Oskaloosa, IA, August 14, 2012- Those who are looking forward to the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter’s (SMAS) annual Woofstock fundraiser may be in for a surprise this year but will certainly not be disappointed. The SMAS has decided to revamp their flagship fundraiser this year.
Instead, the SMAS will be hosting their first annual K-9 5K and Dog Walk to be held October 13 at Edmundson park. This fundraiser will take the place of past years’ Woofstock fundraisers and hopes to offer a little bit more for everyone. “Although Woofstock has been a relatively successful fundraiser for us in years’ past, we’ve been trying to think of ways to broaden the appeal to more of the community.” Says Lindsey Sime, Executive Director. “Woofstock had great appeal to those that were looking for a way to help out and include the whole family, but it didn’t exactly appeal to the individual who wanted to contribute to a good cause.”
The K-9 5K and Dog Walk is hoping to appeal to individuals while still offering an opportunity for families to have a good time as well. The event will offer those who are more active the opportunity to run a timed, 5K course through Edmundson Park and the vicinity. Those who aren’t as eager to run the distance can choose to run or walk a shorter, 1-mile long route and of course, participants are welcome to bring their K-9 family members to join in on the fun.
Although Woofstock is a thing of the past, loyal fans of the event can rest assured that they can still get their share of Woofstock festivities. A post-run social hour will be held after the 5K and 1-mile run/walk event where participants can fill up on refreshments and have a little fun along the “9-Lives” activity path, which will feature activities that the whole family (even Rover) can participate in. “We like to think of it as a mini-Woofstock,” Sime comments, “this way, those that don’t want to participate in the 5K or the 1-mile walk can still come out and support the shelter.” The SMAS even has the option for to register a “cat-napper” for those that are unable to attend the event but still would like to help the shelter.
The K-9 5K and Dog Walk will be held Saturday, October 13th at Edmundson Park. Those who are interested in participating can download and print an event brochure and registration form on the shelter’s website: http://smas.mahaska.net. Information and registration forms are also available at the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter at 2299 235th St., Oskaloosa.
