Basketball Camp Kicks Off At William Penn

Camp attendees head off for the PAC from the Penn Gym on their first day of basketball camp.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The sound of squeaking tennis shoes and the bounce of a basketball on a hardwood court isn’t usually associated with summer but, for a few days in July, that is exactly the sound coming from the gymnasium and PAC on the William Penn campus.

For three days this week, 105 boys in grades 4-8 are taking to the court to practice skills they hope to put to use this fall. Coach Henry said that the most that ever signed up before was 72 in the 11 years of putting on the camp. “It just seems to be getting bigger every year,” Henry said.

Taking care of every kid that is interested in learning about basketball, not just focusing on a few participants, is one of the hallmarks of the camp, and is something Coach Henry prides himself on.

Henry said that the camps are as much a part of their schedule as the regular basketball season is. “We’re happy and enthusiastic about it. A lot of camps, I think, that you go to at the college level, coaches are looking to make money and it’s kind of a waste of their time. Not with us. We really get into it. It’s literally part of our season.”

The camp is an all around camp with stations, league games, shooting, guest speakers, along with awards and contests.

The second camp runs from July 16-18 and is for boys entering grades 9-12.
