Supervisors Agree To Settle Long Standing Lawsuit
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Mahaska County Supervisors got right to work Monday morning after approving the agenda and the minutes from the previous two meetings from May 21 and May 29.
After approval of the bills, the Supervisors heard from Judy Funk of Heartland Insurance over renewal of the county’s various insurance needs, ranging from workers compensation to replacement of damaged items in sheriffs squads. A review and approval of the renewal will come in the July meeting after some review.
Sodexo Management was granted a temporary liquor license for an upcoming event at the National Guard Armory.
The planned review of the Veterans Affairs report was tabled, as no report was available at the time of the meeting.
Randy Kelly of Country Life Health Care Inc. over renewal of contracts between the county and Country Life. A contract covering the lease of the building was tabled until some final insurance numbers could be acquired. The remaining contracts were approved including a $1.50 increase per bed per day at the facility.
At 9:30, the Supervisors entered into a closed session. Such sessions are called for when legal matters or personnel issues need to be discussed. The Supervisors held a conference call with the county’s legal council in regards to an outstanding legal matter involving Barbara Western.
Once the session was completed, the Supervisors agreed to a settlement with Western and includes a covenant not to sue.
University Park then offered up a 28E agreement to the Supervisors in order for the city to maintain Burlington Road within its city limits. Currently, the County is already refunding the Farm to Market money back to University Park, and the agreement helps solidify that the city will be the one responsible for the road.
Burlington Road had been transferred to County jurisdiction after the last census because the town had fallen under 500 people within the city. Along with that transfer, went the money for that road to the county. Ben Doak, a member of the University Park City Council, said that the city has been saving money the past few years in hopes of continued improvement to the road.
The 28E agreement passed, allowing University Park to work on future development.
One hire and salary adjustments were next for the board. A new hire, Matthew Denburger joins the Mahaska County Secondary Roads as a Laborer with a starting wage of $15.15 per hour. The amount will increase to $15.51 after July 1, 2012. Also approved was pay increases to 6 other non union Secondary Road employees.
The next scheduled meeting of the Mahaska County Supervisors will be June 18th in the 3rd floor conference room of the Mahaska County Courthouse at 9:00 am.
