Participation Up 500% Over Previous Year In 100 Day Challenge

People gathered at the square on Friday for the end of the 100 Day Challenge

Oskaloosa, Iowa – A quick glance around the Bandstand at noon on Friday, showed that it was full of the bright smiles of those who had completed the challenge.

Mahaska County had accomplished in growing it’s participation in the event 500% over the previous year, and ranked 6th overall in participation with 10.6% of all participants to the challenge.

The numbers are impressive, with 664 adults and 1555 students participating, Mahaska County was 5th overall in adult participants and 4th highest in youth participation.

Local businesses were very supportive of the challenge as well. In the 251 – 1,000 employees category, four local businesses made it into the top 30 in the state. Mahaska Health Partnership was 6th, with Oskaloosa Community School District being 8th, Musco 27th and Clow 28th.

Every person participated on average 31 hours of activity or 1,270,000 minutes of activity, and with that lost, what would equate to, 7,684 quarter lb hamburgers or 2,561 cans of pop.

Mayor Krutzfeldt spoke to the crowd on Friday about their accomplishment. “Think about how much better you feel than you did just a few months ago. Think about the better use of time spent exercising, learning about nutrition, and enjoying the company of others in the community.”

“It’s time you didn’t spend in front of the TV watching a mindless sitcom. The junk food you didn’t consume. The anger you didn’t feel toward yourself for wasting yet another opportunity to feel better.”

“Now think about the additional time you are adding to your life. The improvement that living healthy brings to your quality of life. The confidence that it gives you. It’s knowing that if somebody asks you to help them move something heavy or do some yard work you won’t be hesitating. You have renewed your endurance. You’ll be thinking ‘Yeah, I can do that’.”

In closing, the Mayor thanked the community for their dedication. “As Mayor of Oskaloosa I’m proud of the Mahaska community and particularly proud of all of you. We see it demonstrated again that we are a community that is willing to work hard at everything we believe worthwhile and have proven it again through the statistics I mentioned earlier.”
