One Killed In Rural Eddyville Fire

Eddyville, Iowa – In a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Press Release

About 6:29 a.m. Saturday morning, the Monroe County Law Enforcement Center received a report that a house at 1017 734th Ave in rural Eddyville was fully engulfed [by fire]. Once emergency personnel arrived it was reported that there may be a person still inside the structure.

During the investigation, remains of an unidentified person were located in the house. Investigation is continuing. As information becomes available it will be released to the public.

Eddyville Fire Chief Rick Smith says the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshall, but he said the two story home was totally engulfed when his department arrived on the scene. The fire crews remained on scene for nearly 11 hours.

Chief Smith said that there were two people in the house, with one escaping the home with minor injuries [burns]. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending autopsy.

Eddyville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by Albia Fire Department, Monroe County Ambulance, Monroe County Sheriffs Department and the State Fire Marshall.
