The Thunder Returns To The Southern Iowa Speedway
Oskaloosa, Iowa – Even names of events are running into the problem of sounding out of place with the near summer like conditions in Iowa.
The 2012 Frostbuster started the racing season off at the Southern Iowa Speedway, even though frost hasn’t been on anyone’s mind for almost a couple of months now.
Mike Van Genderen is the new track promoter and manager this year at the Southern Iowa Speedway. Along with the change in management comes a change in the sanctioning body, going from USRA to IMCA, with IMCA sanctioned events last held in 2003 at SIS.
The 2012 Frostbuster started it’s five night tour in Oskaloosa on Wednesday night, before it’s scheduled departure to Des Moines for the second leg of the special. Racers from several states and Canada made the trek to Osky for the first night, including NASCAR legend Kenny Schrader.
Schrader who’s no stranger to the dirt track of Oskaloosa, and for that matter nearly any other dirt track, joined the 5 stop tour to have some fun after having just participated in the Sprint Cup race at Martinsville on Sunday.
“There was a lot of places a guy could go this week. 5 good tracks, close together. Real competitive series in IMCA modifieds. It just sounded like fun.” Schrader said about the opportunity to sling some mud around Iowa during the week.
Asking Schrader what it’s like to transition from a full Cup car to a modified, “It’s just a different circle,” Schrader said after having run the previous 4 weeks in his Sprint Cup ride. “Been looking forward to coming up here. I’ve run here [Southern Iowa Speedway] more than a few times.”
The regular season kicks into gear next Wednesday night at the Southern Iowa Speedway. Grandstands open at 6:00 with hot laps starting at 7:00 and racing action starting at 7:30.
