Carl Marion Moore was born, November 19, 1920, in Albia, Iowa, the fourth of five sons of Harry Orville and Sarah Della Hadix Moore. Carl’s mother died when Carl was four years old. He and his older brothers lived in an orphanage for a year until his father remarried. He attended school in Eddyville. Carl’s father died when he was 15 years old at which time Carl began working as a hired man for Howard and Bertha Wood. November 19, 1939, Carl was united in marriage to Retha Vineta Wood, the daughter of his employer. Carl and Retha moved to Ottumwa, where Carl worked for his brother at a gas station making deliveries. They lived in Chicago a short time before eventually moving to Oskaloosa where Carl began working as a tree trimmer for Wright Tree Service. Carl served his country during WWII from March 1945 to July 1946; he served as a medic in Germany. After his discharge, Carl returned to Oskaloosa and resumed his work with Wright Tree Service. He was later hired by Iowa Power and Light Company, and served as the foreman of a tree crew until his retirement in 1976. A few years after Retha’s death in 1996, Carl moved to Shady Lodge. He has lived at Windsor Manor in Indianola the last six years. Carl enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping and later counted cross stitch. Carl and Retha enjoyed wintering in Apache Junction, AZ for many years. Carl was a long time member of The Assembly of God Church, where he served as a board member and treasurer for many years. Carl sang with Retha in church and for funerals, with a men’s quartet and also led song services at church. He and Retha opened their home to many guests and visitors over the years.

Carl’s character, personality and life were shaped by his deep and abiding faith. Despite not finishing high school, Carl was wise and intelligent and loved the pursuit of knowledge. He was a scholar of the Bible and it was the foundation of his life. He was the embodiment of what will be remembered as “The Greatest Generation”; faith, family and country were the motivation for all he was.

Carl will be remembered by his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Rev. Dr. J. Albert Calaway of Indianola, Iowa and his son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Craig and Donna Moore of St. Cloud, MN; five grandchildren: Rev. J. Calaway, Shaun Calaway, Caleb Moore, Janelle Figueroa, and Carissa Heckman; six great-grandchildren: Nathan, Brittany, Victoria, Joel, Ian and Savannah Calaway; two great-great-grandchildren: Haley and Lincoln Calaway; and a sister-in-law, Alberta Moore of Ames, IA. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and four brothers: Wilfred, Floyd, Leroy and John.

Memorials may be made to Inner-Mission in the Chicago area, a mission outreach run by Carl’s grandson Rev. J. Calaway.
