Letter To The Editor: Looking Out For

Letter to the editor,

Art Cullen, editor of the Storm Lake Times, asks, “Who is looking out for the least among us?” He suggests that is up to Tom Harkin to lead the federal government’s effort to be all things for all people.

All of us are in need at some point in our lives. When our efforts at personal responsibility fall a bit short of the mark, we first turn to family. We also look to friends, neighbors and church for help and guidance. If we must look to government, it should be that which is closest to us. Our towns and counties are the first resort. The state
should be the last resort. Beyond that, it just doesn’t work.

As government gets bigger , it becomes more ineffective, wasteful and out of touch with local reality. Big government impedes individual creativity and initiative. Despite good intentions, it actually ends up increasing the number of “those who are least”.
