Lady Statesmen Fall to Ashford for Second Time in Five Days

William Penn Women's Athletics

Clinton–Four days removed from a five-set loss to Ashford in tournament play, the William Penn volleyball team was seeking revenge, but unfortunately fell short in a 3-1 Midwest Collegiate Conference setback Wednesday.

The Lady Statesmen (9-10, 1-2 MCC) lost by scores of 15-25, 25-27, 26-24, 22-25.

The visitors led in every game, including owning game point in the second and being ahead 19-16 in the fourth and final, but struggled to close.

Lacey Taylor (Jr., Cedar, Iowa Western CC) guided her squad with 17 kills and a .351 attack percentage, while William Penn lost the hitting battle .286-.179. The junior tallied a match-high six kills in the third game and the navy and gold followed suit with a .302 clip in its only win of the night.

Brittany Rohling (Sr., Thayer, Kan., Neosho CC) was one kill shy of double figures with nine, while Christa Subbert (Sr., Stanton, Stanton HS) added seven and Katie Rielly (Jr., Oskaloosa, Des Moines Area CC) had six.

Katherine Stumberg (Sr., Williamsburg, Kirkwood CC) assisted on 24 winners and Dayna Sammons (Fr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Menomonee Falls HS) contributed 14 assists, while Stumberg also tossed in a pair of aces. William Penn notched six aces to just four for the Saints, who remain perfect in league competition (12-9, 3-0 MCC).

Subbert found her way around the court defensively with 20 digs and starting libero Alanna Connors (So., Libertyville, Ill., Libertyville HS) posted 16.

A solid net defense was for naught as the Lady Statesmen blocked ten Ashford attempts, including six assists by Jeanette Cunningham (So., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Western Brown HS). Rielly tallied five assists and Rohling finished with four.

Next: Although it is not competing in a tournament, William Penn is not idle this weekend, traveling north to Grinnell Saturday to face Grinnell in non-conference action at 11 a.m.
