Oskaloosa XC Has Successful Night At Eddyville-Blakesburg Invitational

Oskaloosa Indians

Eddyville, Iowa – The Oskaloosa cross country teams had a successful night at the Eddyville-Blakesburg Invitational, sweeping both the girls and boys team races. The girls scorerd 30 points to edge out North Mahaska with 33 points. The other 4 schools did not field complete teams. On the boys side, the Indians scored 35 points to edge out Eddvyille with 42 points and Wayne with 93 points. North Mahaska, Tri-County and Pleasantville did not field complete teams.

Brooke VanHouweling ran away with the girls individual race finishing with a time of 15:38 over the 4k course. Oskaloosa placed four other runners in the top 10 with Paige Walter in 4th, Lesley Roquet in 6th, Kelsey Roquet in 9th and Meghan Toubekis in 10th. Riley Berg and Alina Nettesheim also ran for the varsity finishing in 12th and 13th places. I was extremely happy with the effort of the girls tonight. We have had some challenging workouts in the last week trying to get ready for the championship portion of the season and I thought we responded well tonight. The course is an easier course than we ran last week, so our times looked significantly better, but at the same time I think we are beginning to get in better shape. The weather was very conducive to running and it helped with the times we ran. We have a lot of potential within this team and I think we are starting to see that come out in the times the girls ran tonight. Our JV girls also ran some good times as well. Every one of our girls ran their best time of the season and they really competed hard. We still have room to improve, but we continue to make strides.

The boys were led by Skylar DeJong’s 2nd place finish with a time of 16:01 over the 5k course. Spencer DeJong, Jared Boggess and Alex Hyland also cracked the top 10 finishing 3rd, 8th and 9th respectively. Gerrit VanMaanen, Logan Ashman and Jared Buckallew rounded out the varsity 7 finishing in 13th, 15th and 16th respectively. Just like the girls, the boys took advantage of the weather and the flatter course to run their best times of the year. We continue to practice hard as we point toward the big meets at the end of the season, and it was good to see the progress we have made. Top to bottom, the times were really good. I also thought we did a good job in the latter stages of the race picking off some runners to put us in a position to win the meet. We still have a ways to go, but I like the progress we made tonight.

The middle school runners also had a good night, as they ran their longest race of the season so far. Brady DeJong edged out Sienna DeJong to win the meet as Osky had 4 of the top 5 finishers. Colton Berg was in 4th and Bailey Blythe was 5th. The team has been working on getting ready to run longer distances and the kids did a great job tonight. they all ran hard and showed good improvement tonight. We will continue to work toward running our best at the conference meet coming up in a couple of weeks.

Next week the cross country teams will be in action at the Knoxville Invitational on Tuesday at Pine Knolls Country Club.
