Lady Statesmen Sweep Waldorf for First League Win

Oskaloosa–The William Penn volleyball team notched hopefully the first of many league wins Tuesday by quickly disposing of Waldorf 3-0 in Midwest Collegiate Conference action.

The Lady Statesmen (8-6, 1-1 MCC) won by scores of 25-11, 25-15, 25-15. William Penn hit a solid .297 on the evening, while holding the winless Warriors (0-17, 0-2 MCC) to -.053.

Waldorf stayed with the navy and gold early, tying at 6-6 in the first set, but soon fell off the pace as Lacey Taylor (Jr., Cedar, Iowa Western CC) headed the hosts with 14 kills and a .440 attack percentage.

Brittany Rohling (Sr., Thayer, Kan., Neosho CC) narrowly missed double figures with nine winners.

Katherine Stumberg (Sr., Williamsburg, Kirkwood CC) assisted 19 kills and Dayna Sammons (Fr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Menomonee Falls HS) added ten assists.

Taylor and Alanna Connors (So., Libertyville, Ill., Libertyville HS) posted a team-high 12 digs each and Rohling (five block assists) and Katy Hingtgen (Sr., West Des Moines, Iowa, Dowling Catholic HS) (one solo block, four block assists) patrolled the defensive net well.

Next: William Penn travels to Clinton this weekend for the Ashford Tournament. On Friday, the Lady Statesmen face MCC foe Clarke in non-conference play at 1 p.m. and McKendree (Ill.) at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the squad meets Sioux Falls (S.D.) at 11 a.m. and then takes on one final opponent in a playoff game at 1 p.m.

Frye Garners Beyond Sports Award

Oskaloosa–Joseph Frye (Fr., Detroit, Mich., Highland Park HS) made two big defensive plays last Saturday and for his efforts he was named a Defensive Player of the Week by Beyond Sports Network.

Frye intercepted two Luther passes in William Penn’s 24-13 win over the Norse. He returned the picks a total of 15 yards. Both were in Statesmen territory and came in the second half.

It is the second game in a row that a Statesmen has collected a pair of INTs with Andrew Reed (So., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) also accomplishing the feat versus Bethel (Kan.).

For the year, Frye has seven tackles (one for a loss), two interceptions, and two passes defended.
