Question of the Week: Do you Support the proposed franchise fee increase?

Oskaloosa, Iowa- Last week, we asked you if you believed we have too much government. 52 residents responded with 46 residents (88%) saying Yes, and 6 residents (12%) saying No. The Question of the week poll is unscientific and does not reflect the views of Osky News.

This week we focus on a local issue. Recently, the Oskaloosa City Council began considering increasing the Oskaloosa Franchise Fee from .2% to 5%. The increased revenue for the City would be used towards repairing roads in Oskaloosa. After passing on the the 1st ordinance of this increase, the City was contacted by local business owners who were concerned about this fee increase. The Council recently held a work session with local business owners to discuss this matter.

Those who support the fee increase cite our City roads. They say that it is important for the City to do whatever is necessary to improve our streets from their current condition. Those who are against the fee increase cite the rapid spike in the fee. They say that the large and rapid increase in the fee will place a big burden on tax payers and will also make it tougher on businesses trying to be competitive in the job market.
