William Penn Begins Fall at Iowa Wesleyan Tourney
Burlington–A punishing second day dropped the Statesmen golf team down the standings as the squad opened up its fall slate at the Iowa Wesleyan Fun City Classic Tuesday and Wednesday.
William Penn finished 15th out of 17 teams at the par-72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course. The squad posted a final tally of 655 (319-336), while Iowa Western CC rallied to win the team crown with a 593 (298-295).
Mariano Rossi of Dodge City CC took home medalist honors at three-under 141 (67-74), three strokes ahead of the next closest competitor.
Adriaan de Villiers (Jr., Akasia, South Africa, Akasia HS) guided the Statesmen by finishing 23rd (out of 100 players) with a score of 154 (75-79).
Shane Goldsmith (Fr., Benoni, South Africa, St. Dunstans College) had a positive debut, tying for 46th at 161 (79-82), while Geoff Dammann (Jr., Wyoming, Midland HS) was next in a tie for 84th at 171 (81-90).
Evan Thomas (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS), in 87th place at 173 (88-85), and Brian Lawson (Sr., Omaha, Neb., Iowa Western CC), in a tie for 92nd at 180 (84-96), also represented the varsity.
Byron Lindeque (Fr., Boksburg, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) and Will Poterek (Sr., Lee, Ill., Indian Creek HS) competed as individuals for the navy and gold. Lindeque tied for 73rd at 167 (84-83) and Poterek was 97th at 184 (93-91).
