William Penn Shut Out in CCSJ Final

William Penn University Athletics

Whiting, Ind.–The Statesmen men’s soccer squad weathered the storm for as long as it could, but in the end a lack of offense failed the navy and gold in a 1-0 loss to host Calumet-St. Joseph in the championship game of the Crimson Wave Tournament Sunday.

William Penn (1-2) came up well short in the shots category, 20-4, but fought to a scoreless tie midway through the second half.

Unfortunately, CCSJ’s Salazar Salvado finally got one past goalkeeper Sam Gurski (So., Beaumont, Texas, West Brook HS) at the 62:22 mark. Gurski finished with nine saves in the match.

The goal would hold up with the Statesmen unable to retaliate. Tyler Mather (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa Western CC) and Mark Dryden (So., Arbroath, Scotland, Arbroath HS) both had shots on goal for William Penn.

For their efforts, Gurski and Steve Olson (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Linn-Mar HS) were named to the all-tournament team.

Next: William Penn comes home for the first time Friday, hosting St. Mary (Kan.) in non-conference action at 8 p.m.
