Visitation: will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday morning, September 07, 2011 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. to greet visitors.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Thursday morning, September 08, 2011 at the Good New Chapel with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. A 10:15 a.m. family prayer service will be held in the church basement preceding the funeral.
Interment: Forest Cemetery
Dorothy went home to be with her Lord Saturday afternoon at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines.
Dorothy Jean McDonough was born November 11, 1933 to Peter and Jennie (Hoksbergen) Groenendyk near Tracy, Iowa. She attended school at Tracy where she was a 1951 high school graduate. Following her education, she worked in Pella at the Pella Co Op and the Rural Electric Association. She married Marion “Jim” McDonough at the Tracy Christian Reformed Church on November 29, 1957 with Reverend Edward G. Cooke officiating. Dorothy and Jim made their home in Oskaloosa and Dorothy worked at the Mahaska Veterinary Clinic for a short time and at Mahaska State Bank for several years before working part-time for her husband at the Oskaloosa Livestock Auction. Dorothy enjoyed camping with family and friends, especially at the state fair. She and her husband spent several winters in Mesa, AZ. She also enjoyed cooking for and spending time with her grandchildren and going to their sporting events. She was a long-time member of the Good News Chapel and served on the evangelism committee for a short time. Upon their retirement, Dorothy and Jim moved to an acreage north of Oskaloosa. Dorothy was a cancer survivor since 1982.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Jim of over 53 years; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lee and Dan Major of Oskaloosa; and a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Kirstin McDonough of Pentwater, MI; four grandchildren, Cody and Cortney Major of Oskaloosa and Linnea and Gannon McDonough of Pentwater, MI; two brothers: Maurice “Butch” and Ed Groenendyk, both of Pella and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by an infant son, Todd Allen; a sister, Luella Van Maanen; and two sisters-in-law, Helen and Hilda Groenendyk.
