Central captures Div. III trophy in summer golf tourney
PELLA—Central College’s Sarah Paulson (senior, Ottumwa) and Ali Miller (senior, Davenport, North HS) maintained a six-stroke lead over DePauw (Ind.) to claim the Division III title in the Hooters Women’s Collegiate Team Championship, sponsored by the National Golf Coaches Association.
The pair was among five Division III schools in the 58-team field which also included 47 Division I schools and six from Division II. The duo fired 300 to place 28th overall. Michigan State won the tournament at 276.
Central tied for 19th after the opening round Tuesday, carding 75 in an alternate shot format. Playing a best ball second round, the team shot 72 and in Thursday’s final round, an aggregate score of the two players, the pair shot 153.
Paulson is a two-time Iowa Conference MVP. She received All-America honors in 2009 placing sixth at the NCAA championship meet. Miller earned all-league recognition in 2010, finishing sixth at the conference tournament.
The Dutch open their fall campaign at the Buena Vista Invitational Sept. 2-3 in Storm Lake.
