Fremont Voters approve Mahaska Rural Water Franchise Agreement
Fremont, Iowa- Voters in Fremont headed off to the polls today to vote on a franchise agreement between Mahaksa Rural Water and the City of Fremont. In short, the issue on the ballot was whether or not Mahaska Rural Water should supply the City of Fremont with water for the next 25 years. The polls were open from Noon to 8 PM today and 152 Fremont residents took the time to cast a vote.
The end result was overwhelmingly in favor of Mahaksa Rural Water providing water service for Fremont. 136 Fremont residents voted Yes and 16 voted No. Shortly before the polls opened, we had the chance to catch up with local residents and asked them what their thoughts on the ballot issue were. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said that she was tired of the dirty water conditions and that she would be welcoming the new change. Another resident responded that she would be voting No. When we asked her why, she responded by saying,”Because I understand we’re still going to have our water, we’re still going to get the actual ‘water’, it’s just going to be taking money away from our town if I vote [inaudible].”
