Vogel joins Central communications office staff

Central College

PELLA — Rachel Vogel began in the role of writer/editor in the Central College communications office recently.

In her new position, Vogel will work with the media to publicize Central events and student accomplishments. She will also serve as editor of the print and online alumni magazine and all other publications put out by the college.

“I’m really excited to be working at Central,” said Vogel. “There’s a great community here, and I’m learning more about it every day. Each staff or faculty member I meet has a new perspective and an interesting story about Central. I’m looking forward to telling those stories.”

Vogel comes to Central from Meredith Corporation, where she worked as an editorial associate for Meredith Integrated Marketing. There, she worked on custom magazines and websites and managed social media for corporate clients like State Farm, Publix Super Markets and Lowe’s.

Vogel graduated summa cum laude from Drake University in 2010 with degrees in magazine journalism and English writing. At Drake, two of her stories—about mixed-faith relationships and the controversial School of the Americas in Georgia—won Mark of Excellence awards from the Society of Professional Journalists. She was a senior editor for the capstone magazine Think, which won the Pacemaker Award, known as the Pulitzer Prize of student journalism. She also founded the magazine DUH for the Drake University Honors program, which featured stories on national and international issues.

“We’re delighted to have Rachel as part of our team,” said interim communications director Larry Happel. “She’s a gifted writer with exceptional creativity and enthusiasm. She’s already making great contributions.”

As Vogel settles in to her new position, she’s been tasked with becoming an expert on Central College.

“I’m not an expert yet,” she said, “but I’m getting there. Whether it’s interviewing Russ Benedict about his groundbreaking prairie research or listening to Mark Babcock play the organ in the chapel, every day has been a surprise and a pleasure.”

Vogel can be reached at (641) 628-5157 or vogelr@central.edu.
