Samuel was born on February 14, 1919, in County Antrim, North Ireland to John and Mary Jane Moore McNaul. He grew up in County Antrim and attended school there. In 1940, he enlisted in the British Army and fought during World War II in Italy and North Africa. On October 22, 1947, he was married to Mary “Molly” Coulter in County Antrim. The couple lived in Belfast and he worked at the Belfast Airport. In 1952, the family left North Ireland on a boat and relocated to the United States. They settled in Brooklyn, Iowa and he worked for the Bramer Furniture Store. In 1956, he joined the Manatt Corporation and worked as a truck driver and manager of the Ready Mix Concrete Plants. The last ten years of his employment with Manatts he served as the Safety Director of the company. The couple moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 1996.

Samuel was a member of the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church and he was formerly a member of the Brooklyn City Council and the Brooklyn Kiwanis Club. He was an avid golfer and serviced as President of the Brooklyn-Victor Golf Club. He enjoyed golfing, dancing, woodworking and bowling.

Survivors include his wife, Molly McNaul of Grinnell; his children, May Kriegel (Walt Jones) of Ankeny, Jim (Kathy) McNaul of St. Paul, Minnesota, Art (Cindy) McNaul of Des Moines, and Beth (Troy) Meldrem of Brooklyn; ten grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one great grandson; ten brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church or to the Brooklyn-Victor Country Club.
