Osky News Helps Oskaloosa Reach Out
Osky News is less than a year into the news game, but already we are making an impact in our hometown. I just checked the webstats for Osky News in preparation for this article. We had 3817 unique page views on average for each and every day in April. So every month 114,518 unique page views occur, at least for the month of April it did.
It may not seem like a huge amount, but we have been read in some interesting places. The Iowa Legislature is a common visitor to the site, with the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate also being frequent visitors. With just a quick glance you can add nearly 30 other federal agencies that make stops to the website. The one that took us by surprise was the visits by Executive Office of the President. Truly a great honor to help serve information on Oskaloosa to this audience.
So my curiosity on who visits Osky News continued to grow. I wondered just where all these people worked, where they came from and what we were doing either right or wrong. Apple Inc, The Boeing Company, Ford Motor Company, Lockheed Martin, Dow Jones, Harvard University, IBM, General Dynamics, GE, Princeton University, Sony North America, UPS and the University of Cambridge.
All of those listed above have been to Osky News in just the past couple of months. But some visits that make a news person smile is getting attention from your peers. The Des Moines Register visits often, as well as Tribune Company, CBS, NBC, Turner Broadcasting, Disney, USA Today and Discovery Communications.
Growing along with Osky News has been it’s readership. Our readers are primarily between the ages of 25 to 54, with the largest bulk of them fitting into the 25 to 34 age bracket. An interesting side note to the demographics of the readership is that 73% of all Osky News readers are women.
The power of the internet and it’s reach is truly astounding.

One of the funnest things we get to do with Osky News is interact with all of you on Facebook. If you were not aware of how many photos and videos are available there, you should stop over and take a look. We kind of call it our “extras” page. The website contains the story and information, the Facebook allows for community interaction.
So, for some fun, along with the Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group we offered $20 dollars in OskyCash for the person that could correctly guess the Day and Hour that Osky News officially got it’s 2,000th “Like” on Facebook. I am happy to announce that our winner of the $20 dollars in OskyCash is Jill Pierson. She had guessed the date and time as May 24th at 11:35 a.m. Beth De Jong was pretty near correct in this as well, but her guess was for May 22nd at 2 pm. Unfortunately, the time she had guessed had passed and Jill’s guess was just a little bit closer. Congratulations Jill. Please contact us at info@oskynews.org so that we can get your prize sent off to you.
For those interested, our 2000th “Like” was Susan Durian. We appreciate everyone who joins us on Facebook and shares their thoughts on our stories, pictures and videos.
Once again, thank you all very much from the staff at Osky News.
