Kathleen Koenig Steele passed away peacefully on Friday, May 13, 2011, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A wake with will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, at Smith Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 4:30 p.m. A funeral service and burial are pending in Oak Park, Illinois. Details are pending and will be available at www.smitfh.com. Kathleen Mary Koenig was born on November 7, 1942 in Chicago to Eileen (O’Donnell) and Paul Koenig. She was raised in Chicago and graduated from Sienna High School. Kathleen married Lloyd Benjamin Steele on August 17, 1963. Kathleen and Lloyd raised two children, Michelle and Charles. Kathleen and Lloyd remained together until his passing.

Kathleen was a loving mother and grandmother. In addition to raising her children and supporting her grandchildren, she worked in banking, as a real estate broker, and as a real estate appraiser. She loved reading, spending time with family and friends, and her dog. Since moving to Grinnell five years ago to be near her grandchildren, Kathleen has been active in the League of Women Voters, in her book club, as a grade school reading volunteer, and in her church, St. Mary’s of Grinnell.

Kathleen is survived by her son, Charles Steele of Oak Park, Illinois; her daughter, Dr. Michelle (Samuel) Rebelsky of Grinnell, Iowa; and her three grandchildren, William, Jonathan, and Daniel Rebelsky, all of Grinnell, Iowa.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, Eileen and Paul Koenig, her stepfather, Charles Rebeck, her husband, Lloyd Steele, and her sister, Joanne (Martin) Wiegand.
